A Monumental Work by Barbara Fritsche
Oil & Guts
Oil on canvas board
48 × 12 feet
Oil and Guts is a monumental 48-by-12-foot oilfield mural inspired by California’s Buena Vista oilfields and informed by Barbara Fritsche’s conversations with working roughnecks. Moving from early wooden drilling structures to modern steel platforms, the painting traces generations of labor, sacrifice and technological change through the memories of an aging oil worker. The work took approximately a year and a half to complete and has been featured internationally, including on the Vietnamese edition of Daniel Yergin’s The Prize.
